Tanya handles the technical side of SEO at Kia Ora Digital, and leads the work most likely to break a site: migrations and replatforms, crawl and indexation on large sites, and the recovery jobs that start after something has already gone wrong. She came to search from software development, so the diagnosis and the fix usually come from the same person.
Tanya came to search from software, building .NET applications in C#, VB.NET and MS SQL before she moved into SEO. The stack widened from there: PHP, ASP.NET, ColdFusion, Python and Apps Script, across more than thirty content management systems including WordPress, Shopify, Magento and BigCommerce, on well over a thousand sites. She reads a crawl problem the way a developer reads a stack trace, and the fix she writes is usually one she can ship herself.
Fourteen years of agency work, for clients across Australia, New Zealand, the UK, the US, Hong Kong and Singapore, has stayed at the technical end: crawl budget and indexation on large sites, migrations running to tens of thousands of URLs, page speed, and the server, hosting and DNS faults that reach a client as a ranking problem.
A good deal of it is recovery. Hacked sites and spam injections, negative SEO aimed at a backlink profile, and penalties that take a link removal campaign and thousands of domains disavowed before a site climbs again. Clients usually arrive having already lost rankings, traffic and revenue.
The current work is AI: the AI-assisted audit process the agency now runs on, and the codified domain knowledge underneath it, held as skills, projects, memory and connected data. On the first of those audits she was correcting more than half of what the model proposed, and that figure has fallen with every audit since. The work won Kia Ora Digital Best Use of AI in Search at the APAC Search Awards.
A replatform or a domain change is the one project that can undo years of rankings over a weekend, and most of the damage is done long before it shows up on a traffic graph. Tanya plans the URL mapping, the redirects and the crawl and indexation checks that decide whether the traffic survives the switch, then stays on it through the weeks after launch, which is when the real problems surface.
